This year’s Dance-a-thon arrives at an important time in Or Gallery’s history. Since last year’s fundraiser, we have welcomed a new Director and recommitted ourselves to establishing a residency and project space to diversify the opportunities for community interaction with our visiting artists and curators.

This year we also continue to support the development of local and emerging cultural practitioners by hosting Weiyi Chang’s curatorial residency and critical writing workshops, offering coop positions to post-secondary students training in the visual arts, nurturing cross-disciplinary collaborations with UBC’s Critical + Creative Social Justice Studies Cluster as well as providing space for such initiatives as the Vancouver Institute for Social Research’s 2018 speaker series.

In terms of connecting this city’s artists and audiences with conversations abroad, we continue to sustain our networks with influential arts organizations, artists and curators in cultural hubs outside of Vancouver. Last October we hosted Berlin-based writer, artist and curator Rachel O’Reilly and Brisbane-based artist and activist Richard Bell.

In June 2018 Or Gallery will jointly present an exhibition and symposium in Berlin with Savvy Contemporary curators Bonaventure Soh Bejeng Ndikung (documenta 14) and Elena Agudio, including Ming Wong (Germany/Singapore), Meric Algün (Turkey), Mounira Al Solh (Lebanon), Wolfgang Tillmans (Germany), Victor Ehikhamenor (Nigeria/US) and Canadian artists Abbas Akhavan, Deanna Bowen, Stephanie Comilang and Peter Morin.

We are grateful to our community of supporters whose participation in our Dance-a-thons allow us to develop such ambitious programming as well as celebrate the work we do, and the artists we work with.

Here are some friends already lacing up their dancing shoes.
